Today we’ll see how to form sentences with Korean grammar pattern “ Noun – 때 and Verb – (으)ㄹ 때 ” with some example sentences.

It has the meaning of at the time of, when, during in English.

  • 때 is used with Nouns.
  • (으)ㄹ 때 is used with Verbs.

​Is used to express the time when something happened.

The rule to conjugate :

1) In case of Nouns like 방학 vacation and 전심 lunch time etc.

때 Has to be added in the end of the nouns.

It becomes :

  • 방학 – Vacation
  • 방학 때 – During vacation
  • 점심 – Lunch time
  • 점심 때 – During lunch time

​Noun + 때​​​​​ examples :

  1. 질문 시간 때 – During question hour.
  2. 시작 때 – When it starts.
  3. 그때 – During that time
  4. 시험 때 – During examination
  5. 수업  때 – During class.

2) In case of verbs like 먹다, 자다 etc.

(으)ㄹ 때 Has to be added in the end of verb after removing 다 from the main verb.

  • 을 때 Is added when the verb stem ends with a consonant.
  • ㄹ 때 is added when the verb stem ends with a vowel.

It becomes :

  • ​먹다 ( To eat )  – 먹을 때 ( While eating )
  • 자다 ( To sleep ) – 잘 때 ( While sleeping )
  • 읽을 때 – While reading
  • 입을 때 – While wearing
  • 들을 때 – When listening
  • 배울 때 – While learning
  • 만들 때 – While making
  • 춤출 때 – While dancing
  • 살 때 – While living

Let’s see some examples :

Noun + 때

  • 질문 시간 때 다 주의 깊게 들어야지~

You have to listen carefully during the question time.

  • 그 컴퓨터는 작동 시작 때 삐 하는 소리가 나나요?

Does the computer beep on power-up?

  • 그때가 내 인생에서 가장 행복한 시절이었다.

Those were the happiest days of my life.

  • 그녀는 시험 때 많은 양을 썼다.

She wrote a lot in the exam.

  • 지난번 수업 때 진도가 어디까지 나갔지요?

How far did we get in our last lesson?

Verb + (으)ㄹ 때

  • 소설을 읽을 때는 파라텍스트를 고려해야 한다.

When you read a novel, you must consider the para-texts.

  • 난 네가 파란 남방 입을때 모습이 좋더라.

I love you in the blue shirts.

  • 들을 때마다 점점 더 좋아져.

It’s getting better and better with each listen.

  • 배울 때까지 꼭 해야지

You have to do it until you learn.

  • 내가 직접 만들 때마다 봐도, 비슷하게도 안 되더라고.

Everytime I try to make it myself, it doesn’t turn out nearly as good.

  • 춤출 때 난 살아 있음을 느끼거든.

Because I only feel alive when I’m dancing.

  • 그녀는 한국에 살 때 한국어를 익히게 되었다.

She picked up Korean when she was living in Korea.
