V~지 그래요? [Korean Grammar]

Today, we'll be looking at the usage of "V ~지 그래요 ?" with some example sentences.

Usage:

This grammar pattern is used to offer a suggestion or recommendation to someone. When the other person does something that does not suit the speaker this form is used to strongly suggest another action. It has the meaning of "Why don't you?"

It is used after a verb stem and the conjugation rule is quite simple. You just need to attach 지 그래요? directly at the end of a verb stem.

Also, the past tense form ~지 그랬어요? is used to express one's disapproval or regret about the fact that another person did not do something despite it having been a preferable course of action.

Let's try to understand the usage with the following examples :

1. 피곤하면 쉬지 그래요.

If you are tired, why don't you rest?

2. 모르면 물어 보지 그래요.

If you don't know then why don't you ask?

3. 색이 마음에 안 들면 바꾸지 그래요.

If you don't like the color, why don't you exchange it?

4. 방이 찬데 방석을 깔고 앉지 그랬어요.

The room is cold, you should have sat on a cushion.

5. 고장이 났으면 고쳐서 쓰지 그랬어요.

If it was broken you should have fixed it.

6. 길을 잘 모르면 택시를 타지 그래요?

If you don't know the way, why not take a taxi?

7. 배가 고프면 빨리 밥 먹지 그래요?

If you are hungry, why not eat quickly?

8. 많이 아프면 좀 쉬지 그랬어요?

If you were very sick, why didn’t you rest a bit?

9. 아내의 생인데 꽃을 사지 그랬어요?

It’s your wife’s birthday — why didn’t you buy flowers?
