Learning grammar is one of the most difficult things for Korean language learners. On this blog, we will try to help you learn Korean grammar in the quickest and easiest way possible.
This blog will be helpful for those who are studying the Korean language and want to improve their grammar skills.
Today, we’ll see how to form sentences using the Korean grammar patterns " 바라다, 바랍니다 and ~았/었으면 좋겠다 " with some example sentences, and also explore the differences between them.
바라다 is used to express a wish or hope from the speaker directed toward the listener.
It is equivalent to saying "I wish for something" or "that something happens/fulfills."
English words that convey a similar meaning include: hope, wish, desire, look forward to…
바라다 is used to indicate a wish or hope that something will occur.
Let's try to understand it with some examples :
- 행복을 바랍니다
- 건강을 바라요.
It has some similarity with the “~았/었으면 좋겠다" grammar form we learned earlier, which is used by the speaker to express hope or a wish.
However, I would still consider it different from 바라다.
There is no exact one-to-one translation for these grammar forms, but their meanings can be understood through nuances.
If I were to explain the difference properly:
~았/었으면 좋겠다 has the root word 좋다 which means "to be good".
- 돈 많이 벌고 행복했으면 좋겠다 - It would be great if you make a lot of money and are happy
Also, the ~았/었으면 좋겠다 is placed in the second clause with the wishful thought in the first clause.
Unlike 바라다, which can be understood as a statement of hope with the nuance of “I wish for your health” or “I wish for your safety,” it usually expresses a single clause.
For example:
돈 많이 벌고 행복을 바래 – “I wish you lots of money and happiness.”
The difference between ~았/었으면 좋겠다 and 바라다/바래 is mainly in nuance. ~았/었으면 좋겠다 feels more like “It would be good if…” or “I hope…” and is often slightly more casual or personal, while 바라다/바래 expresses a direct wish or desire toward someone in a more formal or polite way.

There's no strict rule for using either of the two, but ~았/었으면 좋겠다 i
is used more commonly in daily conversation. 바라다, on the other hand, is mostly used in formal settings or when offering wishes during festivals, events, or special occasions. It is less commonly used with close friends in everyday life.
For example:
새해 복 많이 받으세요. 꽃길만 걷길 바라요.
Happy New Year, I hope you only walk on the flower road.
2) 저도 언젠가 이렇게 멋진 물건을 만들길 바라요.

3) 그가 곧 한국에 오기를 바라요!

4) 잘 하길 바라요.
I wish you well.
5) 그러길 바라요~
I wish for that to happen.
6) 이것이 우리의 멋진 인연의 시작이기를 바랍니다.
I hope this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
7) 한국이 월드컵에서 우승하기를 바랐다.

8) 안전한 여행이 되시기를 바랍니다.
