Learning grammar is one of the most difficult things for Korean language learners. In this blog, we will try to help you learn Korean grammar in the quickest and easiest way possible. This blog will be helpful for those who are studying the Korean language and want to improve their grammar skills.
Today, we’ll look at how to form sentences using the Korean grammar pattern “~아/어 달라고 하다”, along with some example sentences.

~아/어 달라고 [ Korean Grammar ]

It is used by the speaker to quote imperative sentences that express a command or a request.
It is used in place of 주다 in imperative sentences to indicate “to request (someone to do something).”
Like for example :

  • 가방 주세요. - Please give me the bag.
  • 가방 달라고 했어. - I asked to give the bag.

There are two ways to use this grammar pattern :

  • With noun ~달라고 하다
  • With verb ~아/어 달라고 하다

Rule to conjugate :

In the first case : with noun

You simply need to add ~ 달라고 after the word irrespective of whether the word ends with a verb or consonant.

In the second case : with verb

Remove 다  from the root verb and add 아/어 달라고  after the verb stem.

Similarly, the imperative sentences in English could be translated as.

1) The director kept telling me to raise my chin.

감독님께서 자꾸 턱을 들라고 하시던데요.

2) He orders Jemmy to come with him as his servant.

왕자는 제미에게 자기와 함께 가서 시중을 들라고 명령한다.

3) Tell Jennifer to grow up.

제니퍼에게 철 좀 들라고 해.

4) She asked Tom to carry the box.

그녀는 톰에게 상자를 들라고 부탁했다.

5) The student asked the teacher to raise the grades.

학생은 선생님에게 성적을 올려 달라고 했어요

6) Grandpa asked me to explain how to use this computer, but it was very difficult.

할아버지가 이 컴퓨터를 어떻게 쓰는지를 설명해 달라고 했지만 아주 힘들었어요.

7) He asked me to shut the window.

그는 창문을 닫아 달라고 했어.

8) He asked for some money.

그는 돈을 좀 달라고 했다.

  • Hi, thanks for this lesson! I noticed that some of your examples use “들라고” instead of “달라고”. Do those mean the same thing, or is “들라고” a typo?
