Learning grammar is one of the most difficult things for Korean language learners. On this blog, we will try to help you learn Korean grammar in the quickest and easiest way possible. This blog will be helpful for those who are studying the Korean language and want to improve their grammar skills.

Today we’ll see how to form sentences with the Korean grammar pattern “~에 대해서/대해” & “~에 대한” with some example sentences.

Memorizing grammar is as simple as memorizing basic math formulas. The rule just needs to be kept in mind and practiced repeatedly to get used to its usage.

~에 대해서/대해 is used when the speaker wants to talk about something.

It is always followed by a verb.
The closest English meaning is “about”.

~에 대한 holds the same meaning, but it is followed by a noun, not a verb.

Let's look at some examples for clear understanding :

  • 그는 자기 과거에 대해서 말을 안 했다.

  • 인도 요리에 대한 책.

A book on Indian cuisine.

  • Hello! I am not so sure I understand the difference between ~에 대해서/대해 and ~에 대한.

According to the grammar rules given above, ~에 대한 is followed by nouns, not verbs. But then there is the following sentence: ”In the above examples you can clearly see how the usage of ~에 대한 and how it is followed by a verb.” Does this mean ~에 대한 can be used with verbs and nouns?

It is also mentioned that ~에 대해서/대해 is always followed by a verb. Isn’t it followed by a noun in the following example though?
“그는 자기 과거에 대해서 말을 안 했다.”
