Today, we’ll see how to form sentences with the grammar pattern “(으)ㅂ시다,” along with some example sentences.

This grammar pattern is used formally to express a proposition, suggestion, or command to a group of two or more. It is equivalent to saying “Let’s (verb)” or “Shall we (verb)” in English.

How to conjugate (으)ㅂ시다 grammar pattern?

Verb + ㅂ시다

When the verb stem either does not have a 받침 or ends with ㄹ, ㅂ시다 is used.

For example: 가다

가다 - 가 + ㅂ시다 = 갑시다 (Let’s go.)

Verb + (으)ㅂ시다

When the verb stem ends with a 받침, (으)ㅂ시다 is used.

For example: 먹다

먹다 - 먹 + (으)ㅂ시다 = 먹읍시다 (Let’s eat.)

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

  • 공부합시다. - Let's study.
  • 내일 봅시다. - See you tomorrow.
  • 회의를 시작합시다. - Let's start this meeting.
  • 다음에 이야기 합시다. - Let's talk next time.
  • 점심 식사합시다. - Let's have lunch.
  • 지하철을 탑시다. - Let's take the subway.
  • 10분 후에 출발합시다. - Let's depart after 10 minutes.

NOTE:

The informal form of (으)ㅂ시다 is V + 자.

You can drop (으)ㅂ시다 at the end of sentences and instead use when speaking with friends or someone close to you.

Example sentences:

  • 공부하자. – Let’s study.
  • 내일 보자. – See you tomorrow.
  • 회의를 시작하자. – Let’s start this meeting.
  • 다음에 이야기하자. – Let’s talk next time.
  • 점심 식사하자. – Let’s have lunch.
  • 지하철을 타자. – Let’s take the subway.
  • 10분 후에 출발하자. – Let’s depart after 10 minutes.
