Best Self-Study Material to Prepare for TOPIK Test

Learning grammar is one of the most difficult things for Korean language learners. On this blog we will try to help you learn Korean grammar in the quickest and easiest way possible. This blog will be helpful for those who are studying Korean language and want to improve their grammar skills.

Today we’ll see how to form sentences with Korean grammar pattern “ Verb + 기 전에 and  Noun + 전에 “ with some example sentences.

" Verb + 기 전에 " is used when the speaker wants to express something 'before a certain time or action.'

Same is the case with Nouns as well but instead of adding 기 전에 we simply use 전에 after the nouns.

Let's try to understand this with some example sentences :

  • 과일은 먹기 전에 철저히 씻어라.

Wash thoroughly before eating fruit.

  • 가기 전에 급히 샌드위치 하나 먹자.

Let’s grab a sandwich before we go.

  • 나는 시간 전에 그곳에 와 있어서 놀랬다.

I was surprised that he was there before time.

In the above three examples you can clearly see the usage of 기 전에 with verbs and 전에 with Noun.

The rule to conjugate Verb + 기 전에 :

In the case 1 : Verb

After removing 다 from the main verb, irrespective of whether the verb stem ends with a consonant or verb. Add ~기 전에.

Eg :

  • 먹다 - 먹기 전에
  • 닦다 - 닦기 전에

In case 2 : 하다 Verb

After removing 다 from the main verb if the verb stem ends with 하. Add ~기 전에 after the remaining  verb stem.

Eg :

  • 공부하다 - 공부하기 전에
  • 운동하다 - 운동하기 전에

In case 3 : Noun

In case of the nouns you simply have to add 전에 after the noun.

Eg :

  • 한 달 - 한 달 전에
  • 방문 - 전에

Example sentences with Verb + 기 전에 :

1. 저녁 먹기 전에 잠깐 가서 좀 씻고 올게요.
