Learning grammar is one of the most difficult things for Korean language learners. On this blog, we will try to help you learn Korean grammar in the quickest and easiest way possible. This blog will be helpful for those who are studying the Korean language and want to improve their grammar skills.

Today, we’ll look at how to form sentences using the Korean grammar patterns “Noun + 을/를 위해서/위해” and “Verb + 기 위해서/위해”, along with example sentences.

This grammar is used when the speaker wants to perform an action for the sake of something or in order to accomplish something.

Noun + 을/를 위해서/위해 and Verb + 기 위해서/위해 are equivalent to “in order to” or “for the sake of” in English.

In the case 1 :

~을/를 위해서/위해 is always used after the noun.

The way to conjugate this grammar pattern is to :

  1. Add ~을 위해서/위해 after the nouns which ends with a consonant or ㄹ.
  2. Add ~를 위해서/위해 after the nouns which ends with a vowel.

Eg:

  • 내 친구를 위해
  • 기후 변화를 위해
  • 미래를 위해서
  • 사람들을 위해
  • 건강을 위해
  • 사랑을 위해서

In the case 2 :

~기 위해서/위해 is used after the verbs.

The way to conjugate this grammar pattern is to :

  1. After removing 다 from the root verb. Add ~기 위해서/위해 after the verb stem irrespective of whether the verb stem ends with a consonant or vowel.

Eg:

  • 가기 위해서
  • 살기 위해서
  • 먹기 위해서
