Learning grammar is one of the most difficult things for Korean language learners. On this blog, we will try to help you learn Korean grammar in the quickest and easiest way possible. This blog will be helpful for those who are studying the Korean language and want to improve their grammar skills.
Today, we’ll see how to form sentences with the grammar pattern “Adjective + 아/어지다,” along with some example sentences.
By adding “Adjective + 아/어지다,” you can express a change of state over time. In English, the expressions “become” or “turn into” can be used in a similar way to show a change of state.
1. If the adjective stem ends with ㅗ or ㅏ, then 아지다 is used; otherwise, 어지다 is used.
2. If the adjective ends with 하다, then it changes to 해지다.
How to conjugate “A + 아/어지다" grammar pattern?
No. | Pattern | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | A + 아지다 | Used when there is a vowel ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’ in the stem | 작다 - 작아지다 |
2 | A + 어지다 | Used when vowel in the stem is other than ‘ㅏ or ㅗ’ | 이쁘다 - 이뻐지다 |
3 | A + 해지다 | Used when the verb ends with 하다 | 날씬하다 - 날씬해지다 |
1) Regarding the ‘아지다’ conjugation information:
Remove ‘다’ from the basic form of the adjective. If the adjective stem ends with ㅗ or ㅏ, attach ‘아지다’ after the stem.
For example, in an adjective like 작다, the stem ends with the vowel ‘아’, so you add ‘아지다’ at the end.
Ex: 작다 - 작아지다
2) Regarding the ‘어지다’ conjugation information:
Remove ‘다’ from the basic form of the adjective. If the adjective stem ends with a vowel other than ㅗ or ㅏ, attach ‘어지다’ after the stem.
For example, in an adjective like 춥다, the stem ends with the vowel ‘우’, so you add ‘어지다’ at the end.
Ex: 춥다 - 추워지다
3) Regarding the ‘해지다’ conjugation information:
Remove ‘다’ from the basic form of the adjective. If the adjective stem ends with 하다, attach ‘해지다’ after the stem.
In 날씬하다, the stem ends with 하다, so you add ‘해지다’ at the end.
Ex: 날씬하다 - 날씬해지다

Things to keep in mind :
